OMG! Did you see that? I LOVE that look.
Just a few more positive affirmations to add to your list- but seriously, when is the last time you saw a photograph of yourself and had one of these very thoughts? So often, we focus on the negative things people have told us about our appearance. We fail to see the beauty in ourselves because of the unreasonable standards and expectations of society, and this should not be.
So maybe you put on (or lost) a few pounds since your last shoot, or you haven’t exactly been keeping up with your New Year’s skincare routine. Maybe you have a face full of freckles, a large nose, or unique bone structure. Whatever the case may be, it’s important that you embrace it because that’s what makes you different, and that’s what makes you YOU.
This time of year, as we celebrate New York Fashion Week, there will be thousands upon thousands of designs that will cross many runways. The most important detail to remember in this time is that it is not a piece of clothing that makes an individual look beautiful, rather the individual that makes a piece of clothing come to life. This year, I have had the honour of working with the leaders of the Mélange Movement as they produce their first ever NYC fashion show, and I think what they are trying to do is just wonderful. Check them out here.
To be an individual in fashion seems so historically rare, but it is so refreshing when you see that it is happening, and I love that Mélange offers a safe space for this level of self expression. Being at the first round of auditions was such an experience. So much energy, positivity, and individualism. What I thought was interesting was that they had each of the models do two walks- one very serious, and one with their own fun personality. I think that is what we need more of- personality.
Any of my clients will tell you, I am forever working to ensure they look their best in their photos. That’s because as a professional, I know the difference between industry-standard quick retouching that can leave you looking fake, and high quality no-compromise retouching that is for real life people and families who desire photos that reflect the truth of who they are. One of my favourite things to do for a client is a personal fashion book- yes that’s a thing! Comfortable and stylish looks that compliment their features make it easier to bring out the best emotional response for a truthful reflection of who they are.
As we prepare to celebrate fashion, and the many accomplishments of all those who work so tirelessly in this beautiful industry, take a moment to admire yourself. Everyone’s journey is different, and it’s because of who you are that you made it to this part of yours. Any moment could turn into the greatest of a lifetime, be sure to document it meaningful way.
Love, LK
