I love the month of February, because it is a time where we make a little extra space to show just how much we appreciate the ones we love most. Whether it be with a special meal, a date, or with diamonds, this time of year is known as the best opportunity to go beyond the usual and remind our closest loved ones exactly what they mean to us. Michael and I have been together for 19 years, and to this day we have never been happier. That’s why this week I wanted to share something special with you. I call it the ‘Lover’s Guide to Happiness.’
When you fall in love, there are only so many words that you can use to try to explain how you feel until you concede to the fact that words simply do not have the power to capture the essence of true love. As much as I would like to say that it is as a photographer that I am qualified to make this judgement, the truth is that anyone who is connected with their truest feelings should understand that if you really want someone to experience your love, you have got to show it to them. Last week when we talked about how to spread love, we focused mostly on the big picture, and we talked about making the world a better place. This week as we discuss how to show love, we will be looking much closer (in the fine print if you will) at how love can be used to build a lasting happiness, especially for all of the lovers out there.
Somewhat recently, I came across this beautiful quote, “True love is when you value your lover's happiness more than yours, and make their happiness your first priority.” Although, the source is anonymous, I can honestly say that I have discovered these words to be invariably true in my life with my incredible partner, Michael. Whether it be preparing a nice meal, or returning from a long trip with a special souvenir because you know it will make them smile, the added effort you make to increase your partner’s happiness really goes a long way. Another effect of true love is that it also helps in building trust, as lovers tend to connect in a space of happiness only when they feel valued, appreciated, and safe. Another author wrote about it this way:
“Safe to love, and safe to trust,
How lovely to hear you say
That these two things are an absolute must
Whilst all else fades to gray.
No fear, or sorrow was built to last
The light has made me see
With you, this life is and deep and vast
And rich, and filled with glee.”
–Kensington Brentworth (excerpt)
So now, after all is said and done, what is the ultimate way to show the love you share? Well, to the woman reading this article from the edge of her seat, you are absolutely right- the answer is photography (sorry husbands, maybe next time)!! As I have said several times before, photography is the power to document the truth of who we really are. Just imagine decades from now, when you and your children are gone and it is your great great great grandchildren who discover your Bespoke Books, all filled with precious memories that document the love shared between you and your partner during this lifetime. Where words fail, photography has the power to tell the story of a moment in time, and to bring those same feelings from that moment into the hearts of its viewers. How much greater would it be to reinforce those feelings of love in the very lovers who were photographed?! If you want to give your lover a timeless gift that will always remind them of your love, gift them a professional photography session this year.
I always enjoy the opportunity to work with couples who wish to display this intimate level of love. Often times when a camera is present, a you might feel a bit nervous when it comes to being affectionate with your partner, however, I will normally offer verbal prompts and encouragement to bring out the lovers’ connection during a session. It is very important to document the most special love you share, and to display this story of love in a beautiful way. I know I feel privileged to have someone special in my life, and I do my best to express my gratitude day in and day out. What are some of your most favourite moments with your partner? When is the last time you booked a session for just the two of you? Share an interesting love story of your own in the comments below!
